11 pictures as crowds flock into reopened Leeds tunnel for the first time in decades

The tunnel had been gated off for decades

A disused rail tunnel which has been hidden from the public for more than 20 years has been reopened.

The Greenside Tunnel, which sits between Pudsey and Tyersal, was opened for guided tours over the weekend, giving visitors a rare chance to step inside the long-shuttered structure.

The tunnel closed in the 1960s as part of major changes to the country’s rail network, but there have since been calls for it to be brought back into use as a public greenway.

The former railway line could also have a major role to play in the region’s future, with the route touted as a possible option for the planned tram system linking Leeds and Bradford.

Greenside Greenway member Mary Johnson-Green captured these amazing pictures during the weekend’s event.
