SUMMER holiday fun came to a Leeds care home as it set sail on a wave of nostalgia, laughter and community spirit.

Residents, relatives, friends and staff beamed at HC-One's Aberford Hall Care Home, in Roundhay, were transported to a sun-drenched holiday of yesteryear – complete with Hawaiian garlands, inflatable beach toys and a sing-along soundtrack, writes Graham Walker.

It was The Big Summer Weekender as the home celebrated Care Home Open Week, with daily activities running to June 22.

There was laughter in the air and music on the breeze as the garden came alive with the spirit of British summer holidays.

Traditional fun games included swing ball, basketball and a few rounds of 3-in-1 in a row.

Inside, the sounds of Elvis Presley and showtunes from Oliver! filled the home, courtesy of live performers Kim and Dave, whose nostalgic melodies drew smiles, tears, and even some impromptu singing.

Behind the scenes, Activities Coordinators Naomi Reynolds and Julie Thornton had poured their hearts into crafting the event.

Their dedication was evident in every carefully planned detail, ensuring everyone – from residents to visiting family members, neighbours and volunteers – had the chance to join in.

Care Home Open Week, a national event hosted by Championing Social Care, is designed to connect care homes with their local communities, offer insights into the services provided, and showcase life within care homes.

The week isn't just about celebration; it also opens the doors to conversations about care. Visitors were invited to discover more about the meaningful roles within the care sector and the difference a kind heart can make in someone’s life.

Attendees have been encouraged to learn more about volunteering opportunities and what a fulfilling career in care looks like.

For many, it is a rare glimpse into the everyday magic that unfolds within care homes – the warmth, the connection, and the small moments that mean the most.
