Churwell park ‘saved for the community’ as council responds to resident concerns

Following years of uncertainty, Springfield Mill Park has secured its future 👏

A community park in Leeds is set to undergo a transformation to protect the site following concerns from local residents.

Springfield Mill Park in Churwell will remain as green space, with immediate work planned to improve its condition.

Initial priorities include grass cutting, hedge maintenance once the nesting season has ended, repairs to fencing and a general clean-up of the site.

The transformation plans come after years of uncertainty surrounding the privately owned green space, as residents repeatedly raised concerns about its long-term future, maintenance and the possibility of development.

Councillor Jon Graves, who represents Morley North, decided to take action after he was contacted by one resident fearful that the community could lose a vital green space.

Cllr Graves said: “Residents have spent years hearing about meetings, discussions and proposals regarding Springfield Mill Park. Understandably, many people had become frustrated that nothing seemed to change.

“When I was approached by residents who were worried about the future of the park, I felt there was an opportunity to actually do something rather than simply discuss it.

“I’m delighted that Springfield Mill Park has now been saved for the community.”

Cllr Graves hopes to work alongside local residents, volunteer groups and community organisations to improve the park over the coming months.

He said: “This is just the beginning. There’s plenty of work to do, but I’m looking forward to working with local people to create a park that everyone in Churwell can be proud of.

“Community projects are always at their best when local people help shape them, so I’d encourage anyone who wants to get involved to get in touch.”
