Danny Malin: 'I took my wife on one last date before our son's birth - and had lobster for breakfast'
The cafe got a solid 10 from me
In the run-up to my wife giving birth to our son, we had been making the most of any child-free time together as I’m working locally at the moment.
After dropping our youngest off at nursery, we had a pre-baby brunch date together at Capri Cafe in Newton Hill on our way from Wakefield to Leeds.
The cafe is conveniently located near Pinderfields Hospital, and Capri has a new owner and new menu.

When it comes to breakfast and brunch, I used to always opt for a Full English and some toast, but since starting the Danny Vs Food channel and teaming up with Gary Eats on Danny and Gary, my taste buds have changed.
Capri’s huge new menu includes everything from granola bowls and smoothies to fry-ups and lobster Eggs Benedict.
The cafe is in a stylish container block building and we sat outside on the terrace in the shade. I thought I’d order a dragon fruit iced latte along with my usual flat white and my wife Sophie ordered a dragon fruit spritzer alongside her regular black americano.
These were colourful and sweet, almost like desserts in themselves. I loved mine. It was layers of sweetness with coffee.
I was most excited about the food. however. Normally I’d go for the full English breakfast with hash browns, black pudding and the works. Instead I wanted to try lobster Eggs Benedict and the tiramisu French toast.
I love tiramisu so I wasn’t sure how it’d taste as a French toast topping. I wouldn’t normally opt for lobster for breakfast, but I like to experiment these days.
Sophie went for the Full Vegetarian Breakfast and a pistachio granola bowl. She’s into all the healthy bowls and smoothies, while I was brought up on greasy spoon breakfasts.
The portions were generous. The lobster Eggs Benedict looked amazing with homemade hollandaise sauce. The poached eggs were runny, how I like them, and the lobster was as fresh as I’ve tasted in some high end places.
The tiramisu French toast was out of this world. It was all about the thinly sliced crisped bread. Normally people use overly thick poor quality bread for aesthetics but these were the perfectly thin-sliced vehicles for the tiramisu.
As my wife Sophie can’t eat bread, I also nicked her toast from her full veggie breakfast. This was nice and crusty toast with lashings of salted butter. I also had a taste of Sophie’s breakfast.
While I’m not into greenery or deep-fried halloumi, the mushrooms on her plate were packed with flavour as were the other elements.
The portions were huge and great value for money as all the ingredients tasted fresh and the owner confirmed that she sources everything locally.
You know a place is a solid ten when you find yourself returning a few days later, which I did for lunch. I treated myself to a lobster and steak sandwich while my daughter had a stack of fluffy pancakes.
