First look at completed Leeds United mural at Elland Road which is 'better than the original'

A Leeds United fan artist has unveiled his completed mural at Elland Road.

The Whites’ plans for a new West Stand at Elland Road were greenlit in January and as a result a beloved mural, which pays tribute to the club’s 1972 FA Cup winning side, had to be moved and repainted.

Nicolas Dixon, the well known Leeds United superfan and artist behind the striking Bielsa The Redeemer mural, was recommissioned by the club to move his original work.

Unveiling the newly completed work, Nicolas said that he feels that the latest one is “better than the original.”

“This is the second time that I’ve done and you don’t usually get two bites at the same cherry,” he said “It’s a privilege and an honour to be recommissioned by Leeds United.”

“The portraits are taken from Paul Trevillion and have been adapted to my abstract style. I’m really pleased with how it’s turned out and I think it’s better than the original to be perfectly honest.”

Nicolas was originally commissioned by the Leeds United Supporters Trust to hand paint the abstract design in 2022, to mark 50 years since the club’s historic FA Cup success.

The mural, which is positioned at the north east corner of the ground, features legendary manager Don Revie, trainer and coach Les Cocker and a host of now-iconic players.

As part of the stadium’s refurbishment, the wall that the mural was painted on is to become the club’s new security hub, with the current hub being knocked down. The need for outward kiosk windows meant that the mural needed to be moved and repainted.

The major redevelopment of Elland Road continues to gather pace and with the new season fast approaching, Nicolas had a message of support for Daniel Farke’s side.

“Keep pushing on. Let’s get a couple of new signings in and I’m sure we’re going to have a great season. Marching On Together.” he added.
