'Instead of stepping back, we decided to step up': Wakefield lads take on freezing fundraising challenge for brain injury charity

A group of men from across Wakefield travelled to Norway to take part in a freezing fundraising challenge to raise funds for a brain injury charity.

Second Chance Headway, based in Wakefield, has a team of clinicians, rehab assistants, support workers, administrative staff, and volunteers who are passionate about enabling people and their families to thrive after brain injury.

The charity supports hundreds of people from across West Yorkshire.

Antony Lee `Skipper`, a 38-year-old Personal Trainer, organised the trip with friends and clients as a challenge to plunge and swim in Norway's freezing waters in a relay for two hours.

The team have raised almost £700 of their target for the charity, chosen because Skipper and some of the team know people affected.

Skipper said: “I suffered a torn calf, blood clots, compartment syndrome, and emergency surgery that nearly cost me my leg.

"I’ve only just been given the green light to fly again — and instead of stepping back, we decided to step up!

“Our goal is simple – do something brutally hard so someone else’s life can get a little easier.

"Every donation, no matter the size, goes directly to the cause. it’s all for people who desperately need support after life changing injuries.”

Nathan Garbutt-Moore, Manager at Second Chance Headway said “Skipper and all the lads have done amazing.

"We are very grateful of the support, as a registered charity we are constantly fundraising to improve the support and opportunities we offer”
