Local author to launch new book inspired by Castleford witch trials at Pontefract Castle
A local author will celebrate the launch of her new book, inspired by a Castleford witch trial, at the historic Pontefract landmark this weekend.
Gail C. Powell will launch her second book ‘Eliza Binks and the Witch’s Curse’ at Pontefract Castle on Saturday (July 18).
Following the success of her Pontefract-inspired first book, ‘Eliza Binks - Ghost Investigator’, Powell’s new instalment centres on Castleford woman Mary Pannell, who was accused of witchcraft in 1593.
Twelve-year-old Eliza must travel back to 16th-century Yorkshire to uncover who has tampered with Mary’s timeline and why.

“Mary Pannell’s story fascinated me because history often labelled women as witches when fear takes over." Gail explained.
“I wanted young readers to experience that time period through a character who questions injustice.”
To celebrate the book’s release, there will be a free special launch event at Pontefract Castle on Saturday at 11.30 am.
The event will feature a talk with Gail, who will also be signing copies of her new book.
