Update as missing brickwork replaced on 'Welcome to Leeds' sign on Dewsbury Road

Restoration of the beloved sign began earlier this year

Interim work has been completed at the beloved ‘Welcome to Leeds’ sign on Dewsbury Road.

Unveiled in 1989 as part of a £30,000 scheme, the ‘Welcome to Leeds’ sign on Dewsbury Road, which can be seen as drivers leave junction 3 of the M621, has been damaged over the years and fallen into disrepair.

However, after years of neglect, restoration of the beloved sign began earlier this year - after a sponsor was found, to cover the cost of the repairs and subsequent upkeep.

Taking to social media, Councillor Paul Wray, of the Hunslet and Riverside ward, that interim work had now been completed to the brickwork.

At no cost to Leeds City Council, the appointed contractor as replaced the missing brickwork, cleaned and cleared weeds from the face of the structure and the area in front, and replaced the advertising signage on the front. Additionally, the Parks team has replanted the central bed.

“The final step is to tidy up the graffiti in the background. This is proving tricky because of its location, but our team is working on a solution with the Bridges team,” Coun Wray added.

“Naturally, the feature doesn’t look perfect. It is 37 years old, and our staff have done the absolute best they can without dedicated funding. However, I hope you agree that the site looks significantly better compared to how it was before.

The council's advertising contractor is understood to currently be developing ideas for the medium-term design of the site, which will be confirmed in due course.
