RSPCA appeal after two emaciated and flea-ridden dogs tied up abandoned in Wakefield

The RSPCA has issued an appeal for information to find the person responsible for abandoning two emaciated dogs in Wakefield.

The two male lurcher types, one black and one cream, were found by a passerby in Heath Common on Thursday, July 22.

They rescued the dogs and took them to an emergency vets in Thurnscoe, South Yorkshire, where they were described to be in an ‘appalling state’.

Both were emaciated with the lowest possible body condition score of one out of nine (with four to five being a healthy weight).

Their hips, back and spine bones were all clearly visible and neither were microchipped.

They were also covered in fleas and due to their poor state of health the vet reported the matter to the RSPCA, who are investigating.

This abandonment comes as the RSPCA have reported a staggering 64 per cent increase in summer cruelty to animals over the last five years.

Inspector Ben Cottle Shaw said: “These little dogs had been abandoned in an appalling state - they were so thin and riddled with fleas.

"The black one has scars on his face and I think he has been worked or used in hare coursing perhaps.

“Both have clearly had a bad time, but they are really friendly and have already gained confidence in our care.

"I am really grateful to the person who found these poor dogs and rescued them then took them to a place of safety - they are now recovering well.

“I find it really distressing that someone could simply dump these dogs like rubbish and just leave them tied up and helpless.

"I would appeal for anyone with information about who these dogs belong to or who saw anything suspicious in the area to contact the RSPCA.”

Ben has named the dogs Paddy (black )and Edgar (cream) and they are now in the care of the animal welfare charity where they will remain until they are ready to be rehomed.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the RSPCA’s appeals line, in confidence, on 0300 123 8018.
