The news has prompted tributes from across the city, with many praising Cunningham for his work in local football.
“A proper legend of local football,” one tribute reads. “Gave me great encouragement after having a tough game very early in my refereeing days. Lovely bloke, RIP Terry.”
Another added: “RIP Terry, a true gentleman, and a devout Catholic who did so much for football and for the people of the parish.”
A well-respected figure in the local community, Mr Cunningham’s influence extended beyond football.
Many recall his involvement at St Nicholas Catholic Primary School in Gipton, where he acted as caretaker while living in a bungalow on the school grounds.
In March 2025, he reportedly left the school grounds and moved into a local care home.
No further details about his death have been released.
