There was a rollercoaster of emotions for England fans in Leeds as Thomas Tuchel’s men survived an almighty scare against the Democratic Republic of Congo.
A decade on from the humiliating Euros exit to Iceland, history threatened to repeat itself as Brian Cipenga’s early strike meant they faced the prospect of falling at the first knockout hurdle to unfancied opposition.
England stumbled for large periods and struggled to beat inspired DC Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, but Tuchel’s men kept their cool – and at times rode their luck – as Kane’s second-half double completed a 2-1 comeback win in the round of 32.
And locals have reacted to the nerve-biting game, which sets up a mouth-watering clash with co-hosts Mexico in the early hours of Monday morning.
Sam Matthews said: “It’s a good job we have Harry Kane, otherwise we’d be in the plane home!”
Janet Stockton said: “Can’t take anything away from DR Congo they played really well. England finally got there in the end, phew.”
Lyndsey Rowson added: “Great fight, they never gave up - get in lads.”
We were down at the Beck and Call pub in Meanwood to capture all the action. Here are the best pictures from the nail-biting game.
