Councillor offers update on work to restore beloved 'Welcome to Leeds' sign on Dewsbury Road

The popular sign has fallen into disrepair

An update has been provided on work to restore the beloved ‘Welcome to Leeds’ sign on Dewsbury Road.

Unveiled in 1989 as part of a £30,000 scheme, the ‘Welcome to Leeds’ sign on Dewsbury Road, which can be seen as drivers leave junction 3 of the M621, has been damaged over the years and fallen into disrepair.

Speaking in February, Councillor Paul Wray said that responsibility for the sign had now been allocated and a sponsor found, who will cover the cost of the repairs and subsequent upkeep.

Taking to social media, Coun Wray has now provided a progress update on the restoration, which is expected to cost around £3,000.

Things that have been completed:

  • Weed removal.
  • Initial jet wash.
  • Installation of new bricks where the missing ones were. So, every part of every letter is now back in place.
  • Replanting of the central area with early summer bedding.

Things that still need to happen

  • Replacement of the graffitied advertising signs with brand new signs (due in next two weeks).
  • Further jet wash of the brickwork to try and even out the stark difference between the old and new bricks (due in next two weeks).
  • Jet wash of surrounding bridge structures (next couple of weeks hopefully, but given these are rail bridges, might be delayed).
