Wetherby Golf Club hosts return of ‘Battle of the Balls’ as rugby and football legends go head-to-head

Wetherby Golf Club will host the return of its popular ‘Battle of the Balls’ event this month, as rugby and football legends go head-to-head once again in a competitive charity golf showdown.

Following last year’s contest, the football team arrives looking for revenge after falling short against their rugby rivals in the inaugural match.

Leading the rugby side is Wetherby Golf Club teaching professional David Doherty.

A former rugby union and league player who is now a PGA Professional coach, he brings a strong blend of experience to the role as the defending champions look to retain their title.

Captaining the football team is Tony Dorigo, the former Leeds United and England defender and long-standing Wetherby Golf Club member.

The event will see former professional athletes swap stadiums for fairways in a day combining competition, humour and plenty of sporting rivalry.

Peter Mason, General Manager at Wetherby Golf Club, said: “This is what Wetherby is all about - bringing people together, having fun, and enjoying the game in a relaxed and inclusive way.

"Having legends like David and Tony leading their teams makes it even more special, and we’re looking forward to another fantastic day.”

The event reflects Wetherby Golf Club’s growing reputation for combining golf with a welcoming social atmosphere and memorable member events.

With local bragging rights once again on the line, all eyes will be on Wetherby to see whether rugby can defend its crown or football can even the score.

The match will take place on Thursday, May 21, with the first tee time at 11:30am.
