'Britain's most charmless bench?': New bench mocked for its baffling view of Leeds City Centre car park

New bench location is a talking point in city centre

Every bench deserves a good view.

Forget green parks, the hustle and bustle of the city centre or riverside views - Leeds' newest beauty spot overlooks a multi-storey car park.

A newly-installed seat outside Leeds City Station has become an unlikely local talking point after residents questioned why it was positioned to face Trinity Leeds multi-storey car park.

The seating forms part of a £46.1 million revamp of the station which includes the pedestrianisation of the New Station Street, where it is found.

But its location in front of popular watering hole The Brewery Tap has drawn criticism by locals with a number describing it as "Britain's most charmless bench".

One local Lochie Madzia, 28, who has just moved to the Yorkshire city from Kalangadoo, Australia said he "doesn't understand" its positioning.

He said: "To be fair Leeds Station is a lot different to what I had back at home, we didn't even have one.

"But they could have faced it in a different location so you had something to look at."

Other local - who didn't want to be named - said: "It looks a bit silly and out of place really. No one really wants to look at a car park."

One other Leeds resident said: "I can't wrap my head around its positioning, it is a bit pointless really in a scenic sense.

"Maybe it is Britain's most charmless bench."

A spokesperson for Leeds City Council have said: "The bench forms part of the public realm improvements associated with the wider Leeds Station redevelopment works.

"Street furniture is positioned as part of the overall design for the scheme, taking into account a range of factors including pedestrian movement, space for street cafés serving nearby businesses, accessibility, the provision of regular resting points, and the surrounding public space."

It comes as the multi-million pound transformation was blighted by another issue overs its main station sign.

It reads "Welcome to Leeds" and adorns a clocktower at the front of building which is the centre piece of the scheme.

However it has come under scrutiny from eagle-eyed travellers who suggest an upside-down "p" has been used instead of a "d" to spell the city's name.

It is believed the council are still in conversations with the contractors who installed the sign.
