Drivers face major speed limit changes on busy Leeds road after crashes

The speed limit had been 60mph

New speed limits are set to be introduced in Leeds to help reduce accidents on a busy stretch of road.

Leeds City Council said there had been 11 slight and four serious injuries on King Lane in Alwoodley over the past five years.

Speed limits of 30 and 40mph are set to be introduced on parts of the road near Headingley Golf Course.

A council report said driving speeds were reviewed after planning permission was granted for an expansion of practice grounds at the course.

It raised concerns over a lack of footpaths where users of the golf course crossed the road.

The report said: “This section of carriageway is narrow with no available width for the introduction of footway provision before the access to the golf course.

“The courses are located either side of the adopted Highway. As such pedestrians frequently cross the road.”

The new rules will see speeds reduced from the national speed limit of 60mph.

Ward councillors and the emergency services were consulted on the new limits.

Changes to the road are expected to cost £20,000, funded by property developers as part of planning permissions being granted.

The report said average speed limits would continue to be checked.

It said: “This will be monitored by a pre and post-implementation review of all recorded injury collisions.”

The speed limits were expected to be put in place this financial year after a Speed Limit Order is formally advertised.
