Former Indian takeaway in Chapel Allerton could be transformed into maths tuition centre
A former Indian takeaway in Leeds could be turned into a maths tuition centre under new plans for the site.
Education firm Mathnasium is seeking to convert a vacant shop unit on Harrogate Road in Chapel Allerton.
Leeds City Council is considering a planning application for a change of use of the former Kamran’s Tandoori Hut.
A design report said children would be provided with extra-curricular sessions of up to 90 minutes.
It said: “Mathnasium centres differ significantly to conventional educational providers and aim to create a fun atmosphere, such that children actually look forward to their learning sessions.
“The Mathnasium method of learning is proven to be successful.”

The report said the location was close to schools and cafes where parents could spend time after dropping kids off at the centre.
It said: “Harrogate Road is an ideal area, as it has a good range of schools within walking distance, both primary and secondary, therefore complementing the Mathnasium business because of the favourable proximity.”
No more than 20 children would attend at a time, with up to three staff members present.
The centre would be open from around 2pm-7.30pm on weekdays and 10am-2pm on Saturdays.
The report said: “In many Mathnasium businesses, staff meet many children at their school and walk them to the premises. They can be insured for this.
“There is scope for this to happen here. ”
Mathnasium already runs more than 30 learning centres around the UK, the report said.
The proposed site is part of Chapel Allerton Conservation Area and next to a Grade II-listed building, the former library and police station.
The council is considering a full planning application which is out for consultation until April 13.
