Former swimming baths set for major transformation into 40 affordable homes

The site was previously owned by the council

Wakefield Council is backing a project to transform the former Castleford swimming baths site into 69 affordable homes for rent and shared ownership, with demolition work scheduled to begin in September.

The council sold the land to Vico Homes earlier this year, and the developer has also secured funding from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

The scheme will be supported by Section 106 affordable housing contributions from developers, which will account for 40 per cent of the funding.

Coun Andrew Wakefield, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for strategic, housing, skills and business growth, said the council was pleased to see the former site being redeveloped.

"It’s great to see this former council site being transformed to provide affordable homes for local people," he said.

"We'll continue to work closely with our partners and monitor the scheme so that these much-needed homes are available as soon as possible." He added that using Section 106 funding meant the development would be delivered at no cost to residents.

"The project will help meet local housing needs and bring life back to this part of the town," Coun Wakefield said. James Kilroy, head of new business and delivery for Vico Homes, expressed pride in the project.

"We’re proud to be bringing these much-needed affordable homes to Castleford, giving more local people the opportunity to put down roots in a safe, high-quality home.

"This development is an important step towards our ambition to provide 10,000 more homes over the next 10 years."

The development is anticipated to be completed by summer 2028.
