Leeds Italian cafe granted alcohol licence despite neighbours' objections

The cafe gave assurances that ‘everything would be safe’

An Italian cafe in Leeds has been granted an alcohol licence despite objections from people living nearby.

Amorino Italian Cafe and Kitchen, on Tinshill Road in Cookridge, was granted a new premises licence by Leeds City Council.

A licensing hearing was told four letters of objection raised concerns over possible noise and traffic congestion if permission was given.

But the licence was granted by councillors, allowing alcohol sales between 10am-8pm.

The applicant, Kaveh Kohan, told a licensing sub-committee the business had been open for around seven months.

He said: “Our business is a very small family-friendly cafe. I’ll make sure everything will be safe for the children and families.”

Objector Stephen Lister said more customers visiting the cafe could add to problems with traffic congestion on the busy road.

He said: “We have no objections to new businesses arriving and trying to make good business for themselves.

“It’s a very busy location in terms of traffic flow.”

Objectors were also concerned about possible noise nuisance in the residential area.

One wrote: “We simply believe that a residential street is not the appropriate location for a new alcohol licence and that residents’ quality of life should remain a priority.”

The committee was told alcohol would only be sold for consumption on the premises at the food-led business. The opening hours would be 9am-8.30pm daily.

Councillors granted the licence, subject to agreed conditions, at the hearing at Leeds Civic Hall.
