Major Leeds recycling warning as fridges and freezers can no longer be accepted
Temporary restriction issued on household waste sites in Leeds accepting fridges and freezers
Council chiefs in Leeds have warned they are unable to accept fridges and freezers as their household waste recycling sites across the city.
The warning comes amid a national shortage of specialist processing facilities.
Storage areas at household waste sites in Leeds are at full capacity and the local authority is warning they cannot accept any further appliances.
In a statement on the council website, they warn: “We are temporarily unable to accept fridges and freezers at our household waste recycling centres due to a national shortage of specialist processing facilities.
“Our storage areas are now at full capacity and we cannot safely accept any further appliances.
“Significant work is being done locally and nationally to improve the current situation.
“This does not affect retailer take-back schemes or specialist waste collection companies, which may have access to different collection and storage arrangements.
“If possible, please store unwanted appliances until normal service resumes.”
It comes as the authority’s Meanwood recycling centre will be closed from Wednesday, August 13, to allow for urgent repairs,
Users are being urged to find their nearest alternative centre while work is carried out.
