Zebra crossing upgrades and resurfacing are designed to provide safer pedestrian connections between the two areas.

Leeds City Council said it was planning to allocate cash from the government’s Active Travel Fund to pay for the Bentleys Residential Streets Project.

A council report said: “By improving pedestrian access to the local district centres and schools it will help the area and residents of all ages to continue to thrive.”

Grove Lane, Bentley Lane and Monkbridge Road are included in the project after public consultations were held.

It would included re-surfacing of paths on parts of the Meanwood Valley Trail, a popular walking route.

The report said: “The funding of £350,000 was allocated for a broadly defined range of interventions to improve conditions for walking and cycling in the area.”

The proposals were adapted after survey letters were sent to hundreds of households.

The report said: “In developing the proposals, the project team worked with the local community and ward members to define the package that would best meet the local needs, within the funding constraints, and be supported by the local community.

“Two rounds of consultations and engagement took place.”

The scheme includes a new zebra crossing on Grove Lane and safety improvements to an existing crossing on the same road.

The report said: “The Bentleys scheme was proposed after a previous engagement with residents and ward members in the Meanwood area found that significant volumes of traffic and driver behaviour are a barrier to people who want to walk between Meanwood and Headingley.”
