Taylor Wimpey has confirmed it expects to submit plans to Wakefield Council to build the properties on land off Asdale Road in Durkar later this year.

The site, opposite Pugneys Country Park, was removed from the green belt and allocated for housing under the council’s latest Local Plan, which was adopted in 2024 and sets out a framework for development across the district.

Jade Botterill, MP for Osset and Denby Dale, said she planned to contact the the developer over concerns raised by constituents living near to the site.

She said: “I am supportive of building more affordable homes in our community, provided the locations are suitable.

“However, I am very concerned about the effect this could have on traffic and congestion on Durkar Lane and Asdale Road.

“These roads are already very busy at rush hour and I am not convinced that adding more homes here would be a feasible option.

“If this proposal does continue and an application is submitted, I will be putting these concerns directly to the developers, along with any other issues that locals would like me to raise at that stage.

“Should an application be submitted, Wakefield Council would have decision making power.”

According to a consultation document issued by the company, 20 per cent of the new homes would be “affordable housing provision.”

It said the development would include a range of two, three and four-bedroom properties “to meet a range of local housing needs.”

The document also said the scheme would feature public open spaces and a “landscaped buffer” along the western boundary “to protect amenity of existing residents.”

Improved pedestrian and cycling routes to Pugneys are also planned under the scheme, the developer said.

A public consultation over the proposals is due to be held at Sandal Rugby Club on July 8, from 3.30pm to 7.30pm.

A spokesperson for Taylor Wimpey said: “This site was removed from the green belt and safeguarded for residential development in the adopted Wakefield Local Plan, and we’re pleased to be bringing forward proposals that reflect that allocation.

“We are at an early stage and look forward to meeting local people at the consultation event to discuss our proposals and hear their feedback.

“Our aim is to deliver a high-quality scheme that provides a mix of new homes and long-term benefits for our customers and the local community.

“We intend to submit a full planning application later this year.”
