Plans to build an 84 bedroom care home on the former school site move closer
Council chiefs have granted permission to demolish two buildings on the site
Council chiefs have given the green light to demolish two buildings on the site of a former school.
Kirklees Council has granted permission for the demolition of a former classroom and smaller outbuilding at the site of the old Gomersal First School.
The application, from Angela Swift Developments Ltd, sets out the intention to bring forward further plans in the future for the creation of a care home complete with garden areas, new access and parking.
A supporting document explains: “The site is currently occupied by a largely undeveloped area of rough, overgrown land, bounded by hedgerow and trees located to the rear of the former Gomersal First School building. Previously the development area was school playing field.

“The first phase of development involves the erection of an 84 bedroom care home with garden areas, access road and parking.
“Further future care home development may extend west to the school and Oxford Road.”
For these plans to become a reality, more plans will need to be submitted and approved by the council.
Gomersal First School originally opened in 1912 as the New Council School on Oxford Road. It officially closed in 2010 after pupils were relocated to the refurbished former middle school site to form Gomersal Primary School.
The school was put up for sale for offers over £1m in late 2025, as a potential site for more than 40 new homes.
