The building first opened its doors to the public as Horbury Carnegie Library with great acclaim on Valentine’s Day 1906.

It was built after a grant of £2,000 was obtained from the Carnegie Foundation which, along with money raised locally, provided Horbury with its own public library.

The main event will take place between 10.00am and 12.30pm and includes a visit from the Mayor of Wakefield, Maureen Tennant-King, a performance by Horbury Victoria Band and a cake cutting ceremony.

The Friends of Horbury Library and Wakefield Council’s libraries team have worked together to plan the celebrations with support from the Horbury Common Lands Trust, Boulby’s Bakery, Horbury, and the Horbury councillors.

A spokesperson for The Friends of Horbury Library said: “Public libraries are key assets in local communities and celebrating Horbury Library’s 120th anniversary ensures its profile is maintained and appreciated as a loved part of the town.

“The celebrations are an opportunity to further raise awareness and promote the flexible and welcoming resource that our library represents.

“The events involve local residents including young people.

“Memories will be made amongst a new generation and contribute to a new legacy that will promote its usage into the future.”
