Vacant Leeds cafe could be transformed into launderette under new plans

Former cafe could be transformed into launderette

A former cafe in east Leeds could be turned into a launderette if plans are agreed with the council.

Permission is sought to convert the vacant CC’s Cafe building, on Selby Road in Halton, into a washing and drying facility.

Leeds City Council has been asked to approve planning permission for the scheme.

A design report said: “The proposal seeks to bring a currently vacant commercial unit back into active use by providing a local laundrette serving the surrounding residential community.

“The existing internal layout will be adapted to accommodate commercial washing and drying equipment, customer waiting areas and associated facilities.”

Opening hours of 6am-9pm, seven days a week, are proposed for the launderette, the report said.

It said: “These hours are considered appropriate for the surrounding commercial area and are not expected to give rise to unacceptable impacts on neighbouring occupiers.”

A change-of-use planning application is out for consultation until August 14.

The report said: “The proposal will provide a beneficial reuse of a vacant commercial unit, helping to maintain the vitality and viability of the local shopping parade.

“The laundrette will create part-time employment opportunities for local residents and will provide a useful community facility within the area.”
