'A fairer place for all': What the Green Party pledges ahead of the Leeds local elections

Ahead of the Leeds City Council elections, we’re running election comments from the major political parties. Here’s what the Green Party had to say.

The Green Party said its membership has surged over the past year as it seeks to gain seats in the council elections.

Housing, public transport and cleaner waterways were among the party’s priorities for the city.

The party said “innovative” solutions would be sought for the housing crisis, with plans that serve householders, not property speculators.

The party also pledged action on flytipping ahead of polling day in Leeds on Thursday, (May 7).

Group leader Penny Stables said: “Leeds is a vibrant, diverse, creative city. But too many people feel locked out of decisions that shape their lives.

“Housing is unaffordable. Buses are unreliable. Public services are stretched.

“The Green Party has been steadily building support in Leeds from grass roots up. In the past 12 months, our membership has increased five-fold.

“Local residents have also been seeing the difference that having a Green councillor makes locally.”

Coun Stables, who represents Wetherby, said the Greens would put the needs of the city ahead of party politics.

She said: “But underneath that we all have a deep desire to make Leeds a fairer, healthier place to live for all.

“A stronger Green presence on Leeds City Council means real scrutiny, better priorities, and practical solutions rooted in fairness, sustainability, and community power.”

Votes in the local elections will be cast on Thursday (May 7) and counted the following day.
