Elland Road expansion: Leeds United fans react to 'awesome' approval of development plans from council
Leeds United fans have reacted to the “awesome” news that a major expansion of Elland Road can now begin.
The application to develop the west and north stands was approved Leeds City Council members yesterday (Thursday), meaning that the famous ground’s capacity will increase from just under 38,000 to 53,000.

It will make Elland Road the seventh largest stadium in England and generate £29m a year for the city, according to the club. The development will also make the stadium eligible to be used in international tournaments, including the Women’s World Cup in 2035.

Concerns had been raised about traffic, parking and disruption in the lead up to the decision, but it was felt that these matters were addressed by council officers and the club.
Within the agreement is “one of the most significant Section 106 agreements” between the two parties, which will go towards funding highways improvements in the area.
The club has said that “enabling works” will commence immediately and major construction start at the end of the season.
After the decision was confirmed, Leeds United fans shared their joy at the news.

Mark Davison said: “Great news and so many benefits to the club going forwards. (I) still think 55,000 capacity was realistic.
“As well as the 26,000 waiting list for season tickets, there will be a huge number of members who would buy one as well if available but haven’t gone on the list.”
Tess Bentley said it was “about time” as she felt “the size of our ground is holding us back”.
Thomas Wigglesworth said: “Big respect to the planning officers, clear that a lot of work has gone into that.”
Other fans described the decision as “awesome” and “fantastic” news, with one simply writing: “Hurrah!”
