Abandoned Leeds primary school goes up for sale for £450,000

“The site would be suitable for residential redevelopment.”

A vacant former school building could raise more than £450,000 after being put up for sale by the council.

The Bentley Primary School site in Meanwood could be redeveloped into housing after it is auctioned.

Offers will be invited for the site on Clipston Street after Leeds City Council decided it was surplus to requirements.

Auction firm BTG Eddisons said the single-storey red brick building, vacant for around eight years, was thought to date back to the 1930s.

The auction website said: “The building is believed to have originally formed the library of the original school, which was subsequently demolished.

“It was most recently utilised by Leeds City College and the Springwell Trust as a community and learning centre.

“Subject to any necessary consents, the site would be suitable for residential redevelopment.”

BTG Eddisons said the site was close to transport links, pubs and restaurants.

The company said: “The surrounding area is predominantly residential, with a mix of housing and established local services.

“Nearby educational facilities include primary and secondary schools, while parks, playing fields and recreational facilities are available within the wider area.”

The auction site said the building was listed with a guide price of £450,000-plus.

A council report published in August said the sale would raise much-needed funds and relieve the authority of maintenance costs.

It said: “The property is surplus to council requirements and no operational reason has been identified to justify its retention.

“The property has been vacant since November 2018 and has remained in void management since.”

The report said auction was deemed the best way of disposing of the property.

The site was previously protected by legislation which prevented it from being sold without written consent from the secretary of state for education.

It meant the building was protect by a statutory period which will expire in November. The auction is listed for December 12.
