'Intrusive and out of character' mobile phone mast given go ahead in Gipton, despite objections
A 20-metre mobile phone mast can be installed on an east Leeds street despite objections from people living nearby.
Telecoms firm Mobile Broadband Network Ltd (MBNL) sought permission to fit the equipment on Oak Tree Drive in Gipton.
MBNL said the scheme would provide network coverage for mobile phone firms EE and Three and was needed to replace an existing mast at Gipton Gate West.
A planning report said: “The building is due to be demolished, which warrants a replacement telecommunications site, ensuring vital network coverage and capacity is maintained within the local area.”
The new mobile phone pole will be installed on a footpath around 60 metres from the existing mast.
A planning officer’s report said four public objections were raised over road safety and the appearance of the new mast.
It said: “The objections raise multiple concerns regarding the proposed telecommunications mast, focusing on health, environmental, visual and procedural impacts.
“The mast is described as visually intrusive and out of character with the area, creating a ‘blight on the landscape’ and posing potential safety risks due to its location near a busy roundabout.”
But Leeds City Council granted prior approval planning permission for the scheme, saying the existing mast was in an even more prominent location.
The report said: “Sited in close proximity to mature trees, it would not appear overly exposed or stark, therefore any harm to visual amenity is not considered excessive.”
