Osmondthorpe One Stop Centre: Former Leeds school set to be demolished and redeveloped as housing

Osmondthorpe One Stop Centre (OSC) has been recommended for demolition after it was deemed surplus to requirement Leeds City Council.

The building on Wykebeck Mount in Osmondthorpe, Leeds was built in the early 1900s and was used as a school until the 1990s, when it was converted into a one stop centre, which provides support and advice to locals on subjects like council tax, benefits, housing and social matters.

Since closing down, the building has been broken into and vandalised, as well as becoming a “magnet for anti-social behaviour” which has resulted in complaints from locals, Leeds City Council claimed.

An early recommendation for the determination for demolition of the building was approved by the Leeds Director of City Development, with a second application submitted on Monday, June 10, which is due for consultation on Monday, July 1.

The application said that demolition of the building in the “most economical way forward” for the Council.

It added that the proposal also contributes to the city’s and council’s ambitions “through reducing the risk of crime and anti-social behaviour” as well as maintaining and securing a building which is no longer required.

Once the demolition is complete, the property will remain empty until a further decision about the future of the site has been taken - which the Council stated is intended to be redeveloped into housing.
