Tingley youth centre to undergo £156,000 refurbishment ahead of library relocation

Tingley youth centre is set to undergo a major refurbishment ahead of plans to relocate the village’s library.

In August, Leeds City Council approved plans to relocate Ardsley and Tingley Library from Bradford Road to the Tingley Youth and Community Centre on Smithy Lane.

To support the relocation, a £156,289 refurbishment of the centre has been approved to ensure continuity of the library services while creating a more accessible, welcoming, and multi-functional environment.

The proposed work aims to modernise the facility, improve user experience, and support long-term sustainability by delivering the following elements.

Speaking previously, Coun Mary Harland said: “Relocating library services to nearby buildings - still very much within the heart of these communities - will improve access, increase footfall, provide more space for community groups and enhance facilities for everyone.

“Residents feel protective and passionate about their libraries and the plans offer a practical and positive solution that makes better use of existing council buildings and supports our commitment to delivering services more efficiently in a challenging financial climate.”

To facilitate these works, the Tingley Youth and Community Centre will be temporarily closed during the short refurbishment period. During this period the existing library on Bradford Road will also be temporarily closed in order to facilitate the relocation of the service.

The new site will feature full level access, disabled parking bays, and continued public access to an adjacent car park / drop off area that currently supports the facility. £31,000 of the planned refurb will be spent on updated furniture and IT equipment.

Alongside the relocation of Calverley Library to the Mechanics Institute on Thornhill Street, the relocation is expected to provide significant savings and contribute towards Leeds City Council’s capital receipt programme for 25/26.
