Traffic chaos on A1M in North Yorkshire as overturned HGV blocks southbound carriageway
Motorists are facing long delays and four miles of tailbacks this evening following an accident involving an overturned heavy goods vehicle on the A1(M)
Drivers are being warned of severe disruption on the A1(M) in North Yorkshire tonight following an accident involving an overturned lorry, which was first reported to AA Roadwatch at 4:17pm this afternoon (June 30).
Lanes one and two (of three) are currently closed on the southbound carriageway between Junction 47 for Knaresborough and Junction 46 for Wetherby.
Emergency recovery services have been arranged and are en route to the scene to upright the heavy goods vehicle (HGV) and clear the debris.
However, the closures are already causing a major bottleneck for evening commuters.

National Highways has confirmed there are currently delays of at least 35 minutes on the approach, with static congestion stretching back over four miles.
AA Roadwatch also confirmed in a message that “Long delays and two lanes closed due to rolled over truck on A1(M) Southbound between J47 A59 (Allerton Park) and J46 B1224 Racecourse Approach (Wetherby). Two of three lanes are closed. Previously was reported as an accident.”
Motorists are being advised to avoid the area if possible, seek alternative routes, or allow significant extra time for their journeys while recovery work takes place.
Drivers looking to avoid the gridlock are being advised to leave the A1(M) early at Junction 48 (Boroughbridge) or Junction 47 (Knaresborough) and utilise the local A168, which runs parallel to the motorway down toward Wetherby, though local routes are expected to become quickly congested as traffic diverts.
We will update this story as more information becomes available.
