Revamp of Lawnswood roundabout 'progressing well' as updated completion date set
“Currently there is no major programme slippage”
An updated completion date has been set as work continues at Lawnswood roundabout.
Construction on the controversial revamp to the Lawnswood roundabout junction, of the A6120 Outer Ring Road and A660 Otley Road, is “progressing well” according Leeds City Council’s Connecting Leeds team.
Work continues to gather pace as we head into Spring, despite recent heavy rainfall being more than seasonal predictions.
Starting in August 2025, the scheme was expected to take 12 months and according to latest predictions that remains the case.

“Throughout the project we have experienced multiple challenges with underground services,” the Connecting Leeds team said. “We continue to assess our works programme to keep the works on track, by modifying our construction techniques and scheduling of works where we can.
“We continue to receive enquiries about the project completion date. As previously communicated, at this stage of the works the end date can move in either direction. We are pleased to report that currently there is no major programme slippage and are still scheduled for completion late August / mid September.”
Despite its aim to improve overall safety at the junction, the project has faced heavy criticism from residents since it was first pitched back in 2023. Speaking to the YEP last year, residents branded the scheme a “waste of money,” while others criticised plans to reduce the speed limit along the route.
Between 2020 and 2024, the junction suffered from a poor safety record with 25 recorded injuries at the roundabout, including six serious injuries. Lane closures remain in place along the route, between 9.30am and 3.30pm each day.
From the start of May until mid-June, contractors will be working in phase 6 (northwest quadrant), phase 4 (southwest quadrant) and phase 7 (northeast quadrant). During the delivery of phase 6, council will work closely with residents to minimise disruption wherever possible.
Work completed so far:
- Overnight works to re-mark new lane running at the roundabout.
- On the next road sweeper run we will include the nearby cycle lane.
- Added barriers to guide pedestrians to safe crossing points.
- Repaired damage to carriageway and reported sunken BT chamber.
