Switch to new traffic layout at Dawsons Corner completed on schedule - full details

New traffic layout unveiled at Dawsons Corner

A new traffic layout has been introduced at a crucial junction in west Leeds.

Part of the wider £44 million revamp of the Dawsons Corner roundabout, Leeds City Council’s Connecting Leeds team completed the switch over on schedule over the weekend.

The new layout will see traffic switch onto the new South West works, with outer lane closures remaining in place. Access to New Pudsey train station and Owlcotes Shopping Centre continue to be maintained.

Motorists are being advised to take extra care when driving through the new layout with many segments of construction still in place.

Connecting Leeds said: “The big traffic switch over at Dawsons Corner is a major undertaking and, as with many highways projects of this size, we were conscious that there was potential for it to cause disruption to traffic. Our teams have worked hard since Friday night and completed the traffic switch over by the scheduled time of 5am on Monday.

“Please access with care through the new traffic layout still under construction and with traffic management in place. We appreciate that disruption will have been frustrating for those affected and thank everyone for the patience they have shown.”

Construction began in May 2025 to upgrade Dawsons Corner, which connects the A647 Stanningley Road and the A6120 Ring Road, and is due to be completed by early 2027.

Last month, Leeds City Council released new visualisations showing how the junction will look once the major upgrade works are completed. The improvements aim to reduce congestion, improve safety and create better routes for all road users at this key gateway into the city.

Dawsons Corner connects two of Leeds’ most important transport routes, with around 57,000 vehicles and 1,200 pedestrians and cyclists travelling through the junction each day, underlining the need for long‑term improvements.
