Parking ' big problem' on Leeds village street leads to bus diversion

Parking on some of the city’s streets can be a “big problem” that leads to buses having to divert away from certain areas – a bus company boss has claimed.

Coun Chris Steele pointed out that a service that passes through Menston has had to cut out sections of its route.

Cllr Chris Steele (Lab, Wharfedale) told a meeting of West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Transport Committee: “The 34 service that comes through Menston has been diverted several times because of parked cars on Cleasby Road.

“Sometimes these buses have missed out the centre of Menston completely.

“I’ve had increased parking enforcement come round to visit the site and we’re getting more poles with traffic restrictions put up there.

“Can you guarantee there will be no plans to miss out Menston completely from the route?

“How much of a problem is it for the bus service generally?”

John Roxburgh, who leads the Operations Team at First Bus West Yorkshire, said: “There is no reason for buses to divert off their route if they can pass.

“It is a big problem.

“In city centres it is not as much of an issue, but when we go through estates or more rural areas it can become a problem, especially in the evening when residents come back home and park outside their homes.”
