£62k boost for Morley station as new walking route aims to make journeys safer
Work is planned to improve pedestrian access at Morley Station
More than £60,000 of grant funding will help improve safety for people walking to a town’s railway station.
Work is planned to boost pedestrian access at Morley station after Leeds City Council agreed to the funding.
A footpath will be widened and a crossing point created on Station Road as part of the project.
A cutback of vegetation will also be carried out and new signage installed to guide people to the station.
A council report said the improved route would make use of an existing right of way that avoids people having to use a flight of steps.
It said: “This aims to improve an accessible route via active travel means, primarily walking.”
The council decided to allocate £62,000 to cover design and construction costs for the project, the report said.
The cash will come out of grant funding from Network Rail’s First and Last Mile fund.
The council was awarded £345,000 from the fund, designed to improve walking and cycles routes to stations, in 2023.
Morley has also benefited from improvements to public spaces after £24.3m in government funding was secured in 2021 to launch the Morley Town Deal.
The report said: “This proposal links with and supports a wider package of works to improve accessibility, delivered as part of Morley Town Deal.”
