'Money well spent': Readers heap praise on 'much improved' traffic layout at Dawsons Corner

New traffic layout at Dawsons Corner hailed as “much improved” and “money well spent”

Readers have heaped praise on the new traffic layout at Dawsons Corner.

Part of the wider £44 million revamp of the Dawsons Corner roundabout, Leeds City Council’s Connecting Leeds team completed the switch over on schedule over the weekend.

The new layout has seen the old roundabout removed and a new through road created.

Despite disruption caused by the massive overhaul, Yorkshire Evening Post readers have taken to social media to praise the new look junction, calling it “much improved” and “money well spent.”

Gareth Davies said: “It's not a roundabout at all any more, and the capacity is significantly higher so for once I am happy the money was well spent.” Responding to Gareth, Joanne Moule said: “I agree traffic flowed so much better tonight and no one cut me up going left to Bradford - that’s unheard of.”

Craig Harwood added: “Gotta say I sailed through it at 5:20 pm last night. Much improved, normally sat queuing for a good 10 minutes at that time.” This was echoed by Chris Ross who said: “I went through the junction twice today and it’s so much better already. Just read the signs and the road markings.”

The improvements aim to reduce congestion, improve safety and create better routes for all road users at this key gateway, which connects the A647 Stanningley Road and the A6120 Ring Road.

Dawsons Corner sees around 57,000 vehicles and 1,200 pedestrians and cyclists travelling through the junction each day, underlining the need for long‑term improvements.

Not all comments were positive, however with some criticising the road signs as being confusing, with some motorists left in the wrong lane on approach.

“Gone there today and been confused, it's great we have new layout and road markings but it would be nice to get correct / updated road signs too,” Wioletta Dyson said. “People have been switching lanes few times before getting to the correct one.”

Paul Yod Conway added: “Might help if they put the signs up saying which lane to be in farther down the ring road.”

Motorists are being advised to take extra care when driving through the new layout with many segments of construction still in place.

Scheduled to be completed by Spring 2027, Leeds City Council has released new visualisations showing how the junction will look once the major upgrade works are finished.

The next stage of the works is expected to run from May until September. Access to New Pudsey train station and Owlcotes Shopping Centre continues to be maintained.
