Road safety improvements outside Bankside Primary School completed by Leeds City Council
The scheme was developed in response to concerns about children’s safety
A host of safety improvements have been completed outside a primary school in Leeds.
Developed in response to concerns from residents and representatives about children’s safety, the Leeds City Council-run team at Connecting Leeds have now completed a series of works outside Bankside Primary School, located on Shepherds Lane, Harehills.
The safety improvements, see below, include a new one-way system, humped zebra crossing and updated parking restrictions.

- A new one‑way system to better manage traffic flow on this narrow residential street.
- A humped zebra crossing by the school entrance, making it safer for families walking to and from school.
- Improvements to the junction with A58 Roundhay Road, including a full pedestrian phase at the signals.
- Updated parking restrictions to create safer space at junctions while maintaining parking near the Bangladeshi Centre.
These changes support safer routes to school and form part of the wider West Yorkshire Vision Zero Strategy initiative, aimed at reducing road deaths in West Yorkshire to zero by 2040.
The initiative will focus on the ‘safe system approach’ - safe roads, behaviours, speeds, vehicles and an effective post collision response. Emergency services, local authorities, National Highways, victim support services and road safety campaigners have all voiced their support for the scheme.
