Plans to fix raised joints on Stanningley Bypass, Leeds set to wait until end of 2026
Plans to provide a long-term fix to raised joints on Stanningley Bypass are set to until the end of 2026.
Stanningley Bypass, a major route between Bradford and Leeds, has been a repeated cause of concern for the city’s motorists as a result of “speed bump” type ramps caused by raised joints and imperfections in the roads surface.
In recent years, Highways Engineers at Leeds City Council have worked to provide a permanent fix to the remaining joint failures, and there are currently two carriageway joints just off both ends of Hough End bridge that are raised.

In a letter shared to Facebook to Pudsey Councillor Simon Seary, engineers indicated that residents will have to wait until the end of 2026 to see a long-term fix implemented.
The letter said: “The section between Swinnow Road Bridge and Henconner Lane Bridge is the only section that we still have to replace all of the joints, of which there are c.35. We have replaced c.170. As it stands the works required here are not planned to start until towards the end, if not shortly after the completion of the Dawson's Corner works (Winter 2026). This will also include any outstanding resurfacing.
“In the interim, I will look to identify an opportunity to go in and do what's reasonable to flatten these two particular joints, so that any existing concern is reduced, if not removed until such time as the fuller scheme is progressed.”
Intermediary works will see the temporary flattening of the joints to ease concerns until the major resurfacing and joint replacement scheme start.
A647 Dawsons Corner roundabout and Stanningley Bypass are currently undergoing a major £44 million revamp, aimed at speeding up car and bus journeys, reducing air pollution and improving safety.
As part of these works, overnight lane closures are in place on Bradford Road for eight weeks to facilitate the installation of new drainage and the removal of several traffic islands. The wider scheme is set to be completed Spring 2027.
