Traffic delay warning due to breakdown on Armley Gyratory this evening

The delay has seen congestion around Armley Gyratory, including Canal Road and Wellington Road

Commuters looking to leave Leeds city centre are being advised to expect significant delays this evening following a vehicle breakdown at the Armley Gyratory.

The incident, which occurred during the peak Friday rush hour, has triggered congestion across the city’s western corridor.

Connecting Leeds Travel confirmed that a vehicle has broken down on the inside lane of the A58(M) westbound at the Armley Gyratory, a key artery for those attempting to navigate away from the city centre.

The news comes as thousands of sports fans prepare to head to AMT Headingley Stadium for tonight’s blockbuster Super League clash between the table-topping Leeds Rhinos and Catalans Dragons at 8pm.

The delays come just hours after a separate incident in Headingley, where a pedestrian was involved in a collision with a car on Kirkstall Lane, leaving the surrounding area in gridlock for much of the afternoon.

Data from AA Roadwatch shows that the impact of the breakdown is stretching into the city centre. Heavy traffic build-up is currently reported on:

  • Canal Street and Wellington Road (approaching the Gyratory)
  • The A58(M) Inner Ring Road, with tailbacks reaching as far back as St George’s Street
  • Ingram Distributor, where travel times are reportedly increasing by the minute.

Motorists are being urged to "avoid the area if possible" and seek alternative routes out of the city. For those heading to the rugby, travel experts suggest utilising the Park and Ride services or rail links to Headingley to bypass the worsening gridlock on the roads.
