Exclusive:Work on White Rose railway station in Leeds could restart next month - after over two years of delays

Construction originally began in March 2022

Work on the partially built White Rose railway station in Leeds could resume as soon as next month.

The highly-anticipated station, which sits beside White Rose Business Park and within walking distance of the White Rose Shopping Centre, has sat dormant and untouched since March 2024 after a series of on-site problems, and an “unforeseen increase in project costs.”

At a meeting in January, members of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) officially approved £1.4 million of development funding and entered into an agreement with Network Rail, clearing the way for remobilising construction of White Rose railway station.

Now, the Yorkshire Evening Post can exclusively reveal, that the Combined Authority are targeting work resuming on the site by the end of July 2026.

“We approved £1.4 million earlier this year to get the site up and running again, all legacy issues have now been resolved, and we hope to see activity back at the site next month.” an authority spokesperson said.

Located on the Leeds to Huddersfield line, between Morley and Cottingley, installation of both station platforms, including canopies and construction of the lift / stair buildings has already taken place at the site, which is believed to be over 70 per cent complete.

Work still to be completed at the station itself include external cladding, an internal fit out, mechanical and electrical works, external works and operational railway works. Highways and access work will also need to be completed before the station is opened to the public.

Construction on the project, which was previously forecast to cost £26.5 million, originally began in March 2022 with an early 2024 opening.

Upon completion, the station is expected to have 19 services running throughout the day, and serve approximately 340,000 people per year. An early 2027 opening date has previously been earmarked - subject to quick decision making and mobilisation.
