‘Great progress’ being made at Batley train station as new footbridge opens

A new footbridge connecting the two platforms at Batley train station has opened to the public.

The bridge opened to commuters last month, with work still being carried out on accompanying lifts to allow for step-free access between the platforms.

The opening of the footbridge now means that the underground subway has been closed.

The improvements at Batley station are part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), a multi-billion-pound railway programme that is set to transform journeys across the North by providing more frequent, faster and greener rail journeys between Manchester, Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Batley, Leeds and York.

Jonathan Hepton, project sponsor for Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), said: “We're making great progress in Batley as part of our major upgrade work at the station and throughout the wider area.

“We’re delighted to have opened the new footbridge at the station in mid-April, which will also have step-free access once work on the accompanying lifts has been completed. With the installation of the new footbridge between the platforms, the old subway has now been closed.”

From Saturday, May 30 to Saturday, June 27, more upgrade works across Batley and Dewsbury are set to be delivered.

Mr Hepton added: “Improvement work is still being undertaken and will ramp up during a 28-day line closure in June, when further works to upgrade the stations at Batley and Dewsbury will be delivered, along with track replacement.

“Work will then continue across this stretch of railway to electrify the line and unlock faster, greener journeys for customers in West Yorkshire and beyond.”

Customers are reminded to check their journey in advance at nationalrail.co.uk or with their train operator during this period.
