'Use water wisely' warns Yorkshire Water as heatwave hits

People in Yorkshire have been asked to "use water wisely" as temperatures top 30C once more and in the wake of last year's hosepipe ban.

Yorkshire Water has issued the message to customers as demand is set to peak at over 1.5bn litres a day, calling on people to think again in its Let's Save Water campaign.

Andy Shaw, director of control, said: “We’re experiencing another heatwave in the region this week and we’re urging customers to think carefully about their water use. In the last heatwave, we saw water usage increase by 190m litres during the highest temperatures – which is what we supply to Leeds and Harrogate combined on a daily basis."

Research suggests just 15 per cent of adults fully recognise how much water they use, while the average person uses five times more water every day than they think they do.

The region's water stocks are in a "much better position" this year, said Mr Shaw, currently standing at 75.7 per cent compared to 53.8 per cent in July 2025. The company, he stressed, has "no expectations" of hosepipe restrictions this summer. He said: “Our teams will be working around the clock, as they do all year round, to maintain supplies and move water through the network to areas experiencing the highest demand.”
