Ken coached football for the local Cub Scouts team with some success and did charity work in his retirement, driving mini-buses, taking disabled people out on day trips, then taking elderly people to appointments. He only gave up the latter when he realized that he was older than some of the people who were his passengers.

He also loved gardening, having an allotment until into his 80s.

In his younger days he was a keen motorcyclist, owning motorbikes from his teens and into his thirties, something that he's passed onto his children and grandchildren.

Ken spent a lifetime in newspapers and writing in Yorkshire.

He began in Otley on the Wharfedale and Airedale Observer aged 17 after concluding his studies at Ilkley Grammar School.

He then moved to Hull and worked on the Hull Daily Mail and the Yorkshire Evening Post as a news and courts reporter, also reporting on rugby league and football.

He moved to the Leeds office of the Yorkshire Evening Post in 1969 and became the motoring correspondent in 1977.

He was judged motoring writer of the year in 1985 and also wrote advertising features.

Ken was a longstanding member of the Northern Group of Motoring Writers where was regarded as marvellous company and an excellent reporter.

He leaves Anne, his wife of 64 years, two sons, Philip and Mark, and four grandchildren.

His funeral will be at 2.30pm on Tuesday March 31 at Rawdon Crematorium.
