Research of 2,000 adults unveiled a growling stomach in a quiet room full of people (32 per cent), and getting into the wrong car (21 per cent) also featured highly.

Sending a message to the wrong group chat (31 per cent) was another common culprit, with 37 per cent admitting they’re generally prone to an embarrassing encounter.

For 40 per cent of Gen Z, the ultimate uncomfortable moment is trying to grab somebody’s attention and being ignored – with 19 per cent most likely to pretend it never happened.

But 21 per cent of Millennials consider greeting someone with the wrong handshake the worst of the bunch.

The research was commissioned by Samsung to mark the launch of Galaxy Buds4 Pro, which use intelligence to adapt to real-world conditions to help users glide through the day’s uncomfortable moments.

It also emerged women were most likely to find tripping up most embarrassing (47 per cent), whereas men put calling someone the wrong name as top of their troubles (45 per cent).

But in true British fashion, 15 per cent often apologise after a blunder, as 62 per cent agreed the nation is particularly prone to an uncomfortable gaffe.

More than one in five (22 per cent) will laugh at themselves when a clanger occurs, but 49 per cent admitted they can stomach it when they know it’ll make for a good story later.

Another 49 per cent will make a self‑deprecating joke and move on, while 12 per cent double down confidently, pretending the faux pas was intentional.

Nearly half of Brits (46 per cent) say these encounters feel worse in unfamiliar company, compared with just eight per cent who feel more self‑conscious around friends.

Although a fifth added an uncomfortable incident usually sticks with them for only a few minutes, but one in ten claimed it lingers for 'Several days'.

However, 48 per cent went on to add that having earbuds nearby after an awkward moment provides a welcome sense of comfort.

Four in ten revealed they find it easier to get through uncomfortable situations when wearing them.
