Almost everything costs more than in 2016, but this household bill bucks the trend

While energy and water costs have climbed, broadband deals have become cheaper and faster, but millions of customers may be missing out on savings

Over the past ten years, families across the country have faced rising costs in nearly every aspect of daily life. Energy, water, council tax, food and even entertainment expenses have all increased sharply since 2016. Yet new analysis uncovers a notable exception to this inflationary trend: broadband services.

Research from Broadband Genie reveals broadband as the only utility examined where prices have actually fallen over the last decade. Not only are customers paying less, but they are also enjoying significantly improved connection speeds.

The contrast with other common expenses is stark. Gas and electricity bills have surged by 82 per cent, water charges by 69 per cent, and Band D council tax by 56 per cent since 2016. Daily essentials too have seen marked increases: beer is up 39 per cent, bread 40 per cent, and milk 52 per cent. Even a Big Mac has become 80 per cent more expensive.

Postage costs have risen the most, with first-class stamps climbing 181 per cent. Entertainment and travel have not been spared, as Netflix fees have gone up 86 per cent, package holidays 60 per cent, and rail fares 41 per cent.

In sharp contrast, broadband pricing trends head in the opposite direction. The most affordable broadband deals today are roughly 10 per cent cheaper than a decade ago, while ultrafast options have also become more accessible in price.

Ten years ago, an ultrafast broadband package averaged £39.65 per month. Today, a comparable deal costs about £26.30, representing nearly a one-third reduction. Technological upgrades have also transformed service quality: 2016 budget plans often relied on copper telephone lines with average speeds near 14Mbps, whereas full-fibre networks now commonly deliver speeds exceeding 100Mbps.

However, millions of households may not be benefiting from these savings. Broadband Genie highlights that approximately 8.8 million customers are currently out of contract, potentially being charged higher standard rates.

Switching providers could yield significant savings, with the average household potentially reducing costs by £183.60 annually.

Alex Tofts, strategist at Broadband Genie, advises consumers to verify when their contracts expire and compare current plans with market options. He emphasises that broadband remains the only household service where "you can pay less today than you did ten years ago" while receiving a faster connection.

For those whose broadband contracts have lapsed unnoticed, reviewing terms and considering a switch could return substantial sums to their budgets. To find out more, click here.
