Rising insurance premiums are encouraging more young motorists to consider classic cars, with the iconic Volkswagen Beetle emerging as one of the most popular choices.

For many young motorists, the biggest cost of owning a car isn't buying it, it's insuring it. As premiums continue to put pressure on budgets, more under-25s are turning to an unexpected alternative: classic cars. According to specialist insurer Just Kampers, demand from younger drivers has surged in recent years. You can find out more about classic car insurance from Just Kampers.

Just Kampers says it has seen growth of more than 200% in under-25s buying and insuring classic cars, modern classics and campers over the past two years. Among the biggest success stories is the air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle, particularly models built before production in Germany ended in 1980. Learn more about classic car cover.

A usable classic Beetle can typically be bought for between £5,000 and £10,000, placing it within the budget of many young drivers already shopping for a used hatchback. Insurance can also compare favourably. Just Kampers cites an example of a 23-year-old driver receiving a fully comprehensive quote of £463 for a 1967 Volkswagen Beetle valued at £7,500, while the same driver searching for cover on a 2019 Volkswagen Polo through mainstream comparison sites was quoted £704 with a significantly higher excess. Affordability is only part of the appeal. Younger drivers are also being drawn to the individuality of older vehicles, which stand out in a sea of similar-looking modern cars. Classic Beetles and campers have become increasingly popular on social media, while many owners enjoy the opportunity to personalise and preserve a piece of automotive history. There's also growing enthusiasm for maintaining older cars at home. Without many of the complex electronic systems found in newer vehicles, classics can often be repaired using conventional tools, allowing owners to develop practical skills while potentially saving money on maintenance. Some historic vehicles may also qualify for exemptions under certain Clean Air Zone rules, although drivers should always check the regulations that apply where they live or travel. Of course, classic motoring isn't for everyone. Older cars generally require more maintenance, replacement parts can sometimes take longer to source and they won't offer the latest safety technology or modern conveniences. Even so, for a growing number of younger drivers, the combination of character, potentially lower insurance costs and hands-on ownership is proving an attractive alternative to a conventional hatchback.
