Yorkshire duo Mylo and Rosie 'on cloud nine' as they cover 'dream' Radio 1 breakfast slot from Greg James

Two of the most familiar voices in Yorkshire have spoken of their delight at representing the region on one of the most coveted slots in British radio.

Danny Mylo and Rosie Madison have soundtracked the days and kept thousands of folk across the region entertained throughout the last two decades, having hosted various shows since their teenage years.

Describing their hosting style as like “like being in the pub with your mates”, their lively chatter, friendly ribbing and knack for involving the audience in their easily approachable discussions has made them a mainstay in many homes.

Broadcasting as Mylo and Rosie, the duo left Hits Radio in the summer to join BBC Radio 1 as - in their words - “supply teachers” and have covered the early morning and weekend afternoon slots.

It has all been leading up to this week, during which they are covering the breakfast show between 6am and 10am for Greg James while he is away.

Mylo, who lives in his hometown of Castleford, said: “Since day one of getting into radio, the only thing we’ve ever said that we want to do and achieve is be on Radio 1”.

Rosie, originally from Halifax and now living in Knaresborough, added: “Just to be in that building and on that station was always our dream. And it was always our filter of quality control. No matter how tiny and new a show we were on we would say if it’s not good enough for Radio 1 then we won’t do it because we knew that was where we dreamed of being.

“It’s what we grew up listening to and an icon in it’s own right.”

On what it was like getting the call to do the famous slot, which has previously been hosted by Chris Moyles, Nick Grimshaw, Tony Blackburn, Sara Cox and Zoe Ball, Rosie said: “It was the moment that we’d dreamt of and worked towards and we said could you explain that again please. Did you just say we could do a show on Radio 1? And she was really relaxed and we were like ‘We’ve done it!’.

“We were really uncool and we don’t even care because it meant that much.”

Danny said: “It’s like the one thing that you’ve always wanted to do. To us this is like a kid who always wanted to be an astronaut landing on The Moon.”

He added that he had called up Leeds-born presenter Chris Moyles for his tips, adding that he has always been “lovely and supportive to us” throughout their radio careers.

The couple have become well established in Yorkshire through their great chemistry together and with their local audience, which they say have felt like family,

”We’re loving every second”, said Rosie. “We’re on cloud nine and the fact we get to experience our dream together as best mates. Not a lot of people can say they have that shared experience of it.”

The duo were placed together in their teens by Yorkshire DJing royalty Stephanie Hirst, with Mylo saying: “When the two of us met we realised we both had the same drive and same ambition, and a sense of humour that just clicked.”

Rosie said: “You know when you meet that person. He’s like that brother I never had. In this industry when you meet your other half in that sense it’s like the stars align and that’s it.

“He can read my mind and I can read his and that’s why it works and feels authentic.”

On what has made their style of presenting such a hit, Mylo said: “It’s a very serious world we live in and our style of show is if we can make you laugh and switch off and have a bit of a giggle then job done.”

“We’ve always said the listeners are more funny than us. They’ve got the best stories. We hope to create an environment where people feel comfortable calling to tell us and, touch wood, so far we’ve done alright and had some belting laughs.”

Rosie said: “We describe it as though we’re at the pub and there’s an extra stool there and you can just come in and join in. We want everyone to feel comfortable.

“It’s not just having a laugh. We’ve gone through so much with our listeners. They’ve opened up to us and we feel very honoured that they can do that.”

“We open up about everything” added Mylo. “They’re going through our lives with us and we’re going through there’s with them. Sometimes you have good ones and sometimes you have sadder days.”

Rosie said: “We’ve gone through births, marriages and deaths with them and now this is the next stage of our lives and they’re going to be coming through it with us. It’s wonderful and we’re really lucky.”

The couple said that their humour has transferred seamlessly to the national audience and that they have been followed by many of their Yorkshire listeners, who have been sure to tell them how proud they are of their progress.

Mylo added: “I rang to order some carpets the other week and when I gave her my name she went ‘when are you back on radio!?’ So I think Andrea from Burley Road Carpets was actually the first person to know we’re covering the Radio 1 breakfast show.”

Rosie said: “We pride ourselves on all our listeners feeling like we’re family and feeling like they want to go to the pub with us and that’s the style of our show. We’re not just talking at them, they’re with us on this journey and with us in the conversation.

It’s a great position for the couple to be in as they look to establish themselves at national level, with Rosie saying: “We’re happy with where we are at the minute but we’ll wait to see what 2026 brings. What a way to start it!”

The duo will be covering The Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 1 between 6am until 10am until Friday, January 2.
