Hug Rug promises luxury looks with practical, machine-washable convenience. We lived with its English Garden Eco-Washable Rug for three weeks to see if it justifies its premium price tag.
A busy home with muddy boots, an old stone floor and a cat isn't the easiest place for a cream rug to survive. That's exactly why I wanted to test Hug Rug's English Garden Eco-Washable Rug, which promises the look of a premium rug with the practicality of a machine-washable design.
After three weeks in our 200-year-old cottage, it made an immediate impression.
The recycled polyester surface feels far softer than I expected, with a smooth, velvety finish that looks far more luxurious than its synthetic construction suggests. The pale botanical pattern also brightened our naturally dark living room without feeling too modern, while the non-slip rubber backing kept it firmly in place despite constant foot traffic.

Just as importantly, it coped well with real life. Mud, dust and two unfortunate cat-related accidents were easily removed with warm water and a little detergent, and the rug still looked almost new after daily use. There was no fraying, flattening or loose stitching during the test period.
There are, however, a couple of drawbacks. At £432.99, this is undeniably an expensive rug, even if the quality goes some way towards justifying the cost. The largest 185x275cm version is also too big for most household washing machines, meaning owners may need to use a launderette despite its washable credentials.
Alongside the rug, I also tested the Morris & Co Strawberry Thief coir doormat (£24.99), which proved to be a sturdy, attractive entrance mat with excellent dirt-trapping ability and a classic William Morris design.
Verdict
The Hug Rug English Garden Eco-Washable Rug successfully blends style with practicality. While the price will give some buyers pause, its premium feel, easy maintenance and impressive durability make it a worthwhile investment for busy family homes, particularly those with children or pets.
