My boyfriend’s childhood fan lasted more than 20 years, but the summer heat finally forced an upgrade. Here is what we thought after trying the £129.99 Dreo TurboPoly Fan 508S.

When the temperature climbed, my boyfriend Callum finally had to admit that his childhood desktop fan was no longer up to the job. The little white model, the sort that seemed to be in every home in the 1990s, had somehow survived more than 20 years, but it was barely making a difference in the heat.

We wanted something powerful enough for both the lounge and bedroom, without bringing a bulky office appliance into the house. After using the DREO TurboPoly Fan 508S through the recent hot weather, we have been impressed by how much stronger and more useful it feels than the old desktop model.

At £129.99 at the time of writing, it is not a budget fan. However, its powerful airflow, adjustable settings and remote control have made it one of our most-used summer purchases, even if the higher speeds are noisier than we expected.

First of all, we really liked the look and design of it. It feels modern, sleek, and much more stylish than your average fan, so it doesn’t feel out of place in the room. The optional multi-coloured lights were a fun bonus too and added a nice bit of ambience, especially in the evenings.

Most importantly, the cooling power has been brilliant. Even during the heatwave, it kept blowing out cool air consistently, which was the main thing we cared about. We’ve been moving it around with us from the lounge to the kitchen and then into the bedroom, so it’s been getting a lot of use.

The remote control has also been a huge plus because it means you don’t have to keep getting up to change the settings, which is especially useful when you’re relaxing or already in bed.

The only thing worth mentioning is that although it is advertised as being “ultra quiet”, we did find that on the highest of its 9 speed settings it is quite loud - and that can be a bit of a problem when trying to sleep. That said, it isn’t ridiculously loud and we’d much rather be cool and put up with the noise than be too hot, so for us it’s a trade-off we’re happy to make.

After a few days, we did adapt to the sound created by the louder settings, although during the evening if we had the TV on we definitely had to turn the volume up if the fan was set above a 7. For sleeping, we found anything above a 8 was just too noisy for us to properly adjust to, even though we did try. Thankfully, level 8 still gave us all the cool air and power we needed, so it wasn’t really an issue in the end.

Overall, we’re seriously impressed. It’s powerful, looks great, keeps us cool, and has been a massive upgrade from our old fan. It’s definitely worth it if you want something effective and don’t mind a bit of extra noise at the higher settings. It feels durable too, so I can see this lasting us another 20 years plus.

Another option is the slightly larger Dreo 43 Inch Smart Standing Fan (£159.99). This has 6 modes and up to 8 speeds, plus 120° horizontal and 105° vertical oscillation which distributes air more efficiently. In addition, the floor fan has an adjustable height from 37.1 to 43 Inch.
