It was the year final preparations were being made for rationing. This photo of women sat around a large table preparing the first ration books was taken in November 1939 just two months before it officially began when bacon, butter, and sugar the first foods to be restricted. The image is one 11 taking a look at life around Leeds city centre during 1939 with a range of landmarks in focus. The images are a mix from the YEP archive, Thoresby Society and others published courtesy of photographic archive Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service. They also run heritage blog The Secret Library Leeds, which provides a behind the scenes look at the Central Library and highlights from its special collections, including rare books hidden away in the stacks.
